“Swan Lake, the Tchaikovsky Enigma”

A workshop exploring the reasons for the enormous success and popularity of “Swan Lake” and what it is about this great masterpiece that, after more than 100 years, continues to fascinate choreographers, dancers and audiences alike.
The course begins with a seminar conducted by Silvia Poletti and Gabriella Gori, both ballet historians and respected dance critics, who, with documentation and film, will explore the origins of “Swan Lake” and it’s many productions from Petipa/Ivanov to Mats Ek and Matthew Bourne.

The course continues with 6 masterclasses conducted by Paul Chalmer, who has recently created “Swan Lake, the Tchaikovsky Enigma” for the 2011 festival of the Maggio Musicale in Florence. During the masterclasses, students will work on the original Petipa/ Ivanov choreography in confrontation with the new choreography by Paul Chalmer, exploring the choreographic transformations used to create this new version. In February, it will also be possible to see Chalmer’s new production in performance during the winter season of MaggioDanza.

The workshop will conclude with a presentation by Paul Chalmer, Silvia Poletti and Gabriella Gori including a demonstration and performance.
